Softball Earns Two Victories at Bates to Sweep Final Regular-Season Series

LEWISTON, Maine – In their final two games of the regular season on Saturday, the Tufts University Jumbos earned two eight-run victories over Bates College 12-2 and 8-0 to complete the three-game NESCAC East series sweep.

Michelle Adelman (pictured) and Meggie Murphy led the Tufts (30-9, 11-1 NESCAC East) offense in game one, as Adelman finished 3 for 3 with five runs scored and four rbis with a solo home run and Murphy also had three hits in five at-bats with three runs scored and two rbis. Lindsey Kim and Rachel Liazos each went 3 for 4 for Bates (8-16, 1-11 NESCAC East) with Kim adding a run scored and an rbi.

Adelman hit a solo shot in the top of the first to start it off for the Jumbos, and Bates matched them with a run of their own in the bottom half on a Kim rbi single. Adelman then crossed the plate in the third on a Josie Steinberg single.

Later in the game is when the offense came alive for Tufts, scoring 10 runs in the final three innings. Bela Jimenez hit a three-run home run in the fifth to make it 5-2 after Bates added a run in the fourth. Murphy hit a two-rbi double in the top of the sixth, eventually scoring on an Adelman rbi double. Jimenez tripled to center to score Adelman later in the inning and Adelman found success again in the seventh inning with a two-rbi single, scoring later on a Bates error. Tufts pitcher Sky Johnson shut down the Bates order in the ninth to end the game with a 12-2 score.

Johnson threw a complete game for the Jumbos, earning the win to move to 14-4 and allowing 12 hits and two runs with eight strikeouts. Danielle Polirer was credited with the loss for Bates, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing 11 hits and nine runs with two strikeouts. Maggie Hillwig threw 1.1 innings for Bates, allowing two hits and zero earned runs.

Tufts shut out the Bobcats in six innings in game two by a score of 8-0, with pitcher Sophia DiCocco tossing a complete game and allowing just five hits with two strikeouts. Murphy started the game with a solo home run to make it 1-0, and they scored three runs combined in the third and fourth. Adelman scored in the third inning on a Bates error as Lexi Grein followed that up with an rbi single to center. Rachel Moore crossed the plate in the fourth inning for Tufts on a Steinberg single.

The Jumbos scored four in the sixth inning as Jimenez added two more rbis on a single to right center and Steinberg scored on a wild pitch in the next at-bat. Keriann Slayton ended the sixth with an rbi single to score Jimenez. DiCocco retired the bates lineup in order in the sixth to clinch the 8-0 victory for Tufts and the series sweep. Hillwig was credited with the loss for Bates, throwing six innings an allowing five earned runs on 15 hits with two strikeouts.

The Jumbos will now get ready to host the first round of the NESCAC Tournament, starting Friday, May 6th.
