MEDFORD - USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Player of the Year Mac Bredahl (pictured) scored four goals with eight assists for 12 points to lead the #9 Tufts men's lacrosse team to a 23-15 victory over seventh-ranked Bowdoin on a windy Wednesday night at Bello Field. The game was for the #1 seed in the NESCAC, which Tufts won for the seventh time.
The Jumbos looked like they were going to run away with the game, up 11-3 in the middle of the second quarter. Bowdoin cut the margin to 13-7 at the half, and was within four (16-12) at the end of the third quarter. However, Jumbo Camden Kelleher scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter and the Jumbos had three of the first four to open up some space and go on to the victory.
Bredahl's eight assists and 12 points both tied for the second-most for a game in Tufts history. Jack Boyden with four goals and three assists tonight, Kelleher with four and one and Tommy Swank with four goals aided the Jumbo offense. Defensively, junior Kyle Adelmann was strong again with five caused turnovers and nine ground balls, while Conner Garzone made 11 saves in goal.
Bowdoin's Donal Mullane nearly matched Bredahl with five goals and four assists for nine points. Jason Lach added four goals, while Pat White collected three ground balls. Goalie Robert Hobbs looked like he might steal the game early, making 12 first-quarter saves. He finished with 19.
The Polar Bears went 3 for 4 on man-up situations, including the first goal of the game by Chris Fowler. However, Tufts got goals from five different players to lead 5-2 at the end of one period.
The Jumbos would build their 11-3 advantage by scoring six of the first seven goals in the second quarter. Bredahl had two goals and two assists during that stretch. The Jumbo lead was at 13-4 before Bowdoin finished the frame with a man-up goal by Patrick Fitzgerald and two goals in the last 30 seconds of the half from Will Byrne and Mullane.
Bowdoin would continue to claw back into it in the third. Lach scored twice and Mullane had a goal and two assists, then Zack Goorno cleared and scored with 14 seconds left in the period to make it 16-12.
The Polar Bears won the face-off to start the fourth and had a chance to close within three, but turned the ball over. Tufts responded with back-to-back goals by Kelleher 31 seconds apart to go ahead 18-12. Bowdoin would twice get within five, including 19-14 on a Lach man-up goal, but the Jumbos scored the next two by Swank and Boyden, assisted by Bredahl, to lead 21-14 with five minutes to go and that was all she wrote.
Mason Kohn, who had taken 15 face-offs all season for Tufts entering tonight, won 11 for the Jumbos. Joey Waldbaum finished with seven ground balls and two caused turnovers for Tufts. Shots were 70-41 in Tufts' favor, and they dominated ground balls as well at 53-33.
Ethan Barnard was 21 for 38 on face-offs for Bowdoin, who took their first loss of the year (14-1, 9-1).
The Jumbos (13-2, 9-1 NESCAC) will get Connecticut College in the quarterfinal round of the NESCAC Tournament on Saturday at 3:00 at Bello. Second-seed Bowdoin will host #7 seed Hamilton.
