Box Score
WATERVILLE, Maine – Sophomore pitcher Sky Johnson (pictured) tossed a complete game shutout on Saturday, helping the #13 Tufts University softball team to a 2-0 NESCAC victory at Colby College. The Jumbos took two of three games this weekend for the series win.
Both pitchers went all seven innings, as Johnson got the win and finished with just four hits allowed with seven strikeouts, while Colby's (15-10, 4-2 NESCAC) sophomore pitcher Abby Orso was credited with the loss, allowing four hits and two runs with four strikeouts. Johnson improves to 11-3 and Orso falls to 7-3 on the season.
Tufts (20-7, 5-1 NESCAC) scored the only two runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning when Bela Jimenez started a one-out rally with a single. Jimenez then stole second and scored on a Michelle Adelman rbi single, with Adelman reaching second on a fielder's choice in the next at-bat, eventually scoring on a Meggie Murphy rbi double.
The Jumbos' first scoring opportunity came in the second inning when Nicole Russo and Emma Jacobson reached base on consecutive two-out errors, giving Tufts runners on first and third, but they could not get the run across. Johnson and the Jumbos' defense did not allow any Colby runners past second base in the game, including the seventh inning, when Jackie Hill hit a one-out double for the Mules, but Johnson shut down the final two batters to clinch the 2-0 victory.
Both teams had four hits and Adelman led the Tufts offense, finishing 2 for 3 with a run scored and an rbi. Jimenez and Murphy were the other two Jumbos with hits in the game. Morgan Fusco found success at the plate for the Mules, going 2 for 3 with a double.
Next, Tufts will travel to Williams College on Monday, April 18th for games against WPI and Williams, with the first game set to start at 1 pm.
