LYNCHBURG, Va. - In a non-league battle between top 10 teams, Preseason Player of the Year Mac Bredahl scored seven goals with one assist as the #3 Tufts men's lacrosse team pulled away from #7 Lynchburg for a 21-11 win on Tuesday night at Shellenberger Field.
Bredahl scored three goals with an assist in the third quarter when the Jumbos turned an 11-9 halftime lead into an 18-10 advantage by outsourcing the Hornets 7-1. Eight different Jumbos scored points in the third - including a goal and an assist from Joe Murtha. Tufts scored seven in a row to start the period until Brett Rogers ended the run for Lynchburg with nine seconds on the clock.
Halting any late momentum by the host Hornets, Bredahl scored the first goal of the fourth quarter and Jack Boyden had the next one as Tufts pushed its lead to 10 goals (20-10).
A wild first quarter saw 13 goals scored between the teams. Lynchburg had early leads of 1-0 and 2-1 and the game was tied 3-3 as Ryan Kenney had a goal and an assist for the hosts. Then in a frantic final 2:33, the teams combined for seven goals including five by Tufts (Boyden with two). The Jumbos led 8-5.
However, Kenney netted the first two of the second quarter and Lynchburg was within 8-7. Bredhal led a Jumbo three-goal run with two of his own though making it 11-7. The Hornets had the last two of the period and the game was everything it was billed to be through 30 minutes.
An active Jumbo defense caused 17 turnovers in the game led by five from Kyle Adelmann and three by Matthew Lane. Adelman added nine ground balls. Freshman Parker Merril was an outstanding 17 for 21 on face-offs and Conner Garzone made 11 saves in goal. Boyden finished with four and one offensively, while Tommy Swank (pictured) netted a career-high three goals.
Kenney finished with four goals and two assists to lead Lynchburg (5-3). Dom Zingo caused three turnovers, Chris Darminio grabbed 10 ground balls and Patrick Moore made 16 saves for the Hornets.
The Jumbos (5-0) finished with advantages of 64-39 in shots, 63-49 in ground balls and 21-12 on face-offs. Both teams scored two man-up goals.
Tufts is back in NESCAC play on Saturday at Trinity College.
