HOBOKEN, N.J. – With three hat tricks and eight total goal scorers, the third-ranked Tufts University men's lacrosse team earned an 18-5 victory at Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon.
Seniors Mac Bredahl (pictured) and Cole Salton, as well as junior Jack Boyden each finished with three goals for the Jumbos. Bredahl added five assists while Boyden tacked on three. Stevens' Michael Burns and Jack Savarese each finished with two goals while Henry Johnson scored one goal for the Ducks (2-6).
The Jumbos (4-0) started off the game with five consecutive goals, with senior Duke Alf scoring the first one just over four minutes into the game. Senior Camden Kelleher scored the next goal just over one minute later after receiving a pass from freshman Charlie Tagliaferri. The next three Jumbo goals were all from Boyden, as Bredahl assisted two of the three goals and Kelleher assisted the other. With 1:07 left in the first quarter, Burns scored the first of the game for Stevens, but it was immediately answered by Tufts' Louis Timmins with 29 seconds remaining with an assist from Joey Waldbaum to send the visitors into the second quarter with a 6-1 lead.
Both teams played great defense in the second quarter, as there was just one goal scored by each team. Burns scored his second goal of the game in the fifth minute of the quarter sending a shot past Tufts goalie Conner Garzone after receiving a pass from Savarese. After 10 minutes of scoreless action, Salton scored for Tufts to make it 7-2 going into halftime. Bredahl was credited with the assist for the Jumbos.
Tufts came back firing in the third quarter, playing great defense to shut the Ducks out and scoring eight goals to make it 15-2. Bredahl scored three goals, junior Tommy Swank scored two man-up goals, Salton scored two goals and freshman Cam Delcristo scored his second career goal in the quarter. Bredahl and Boyden added two assists each in the quarter while Alf and Joe Murtha also recorded assists.
Each team scored three goals in the fourth quarter with Alf earning the first in the eighth minute with a man-up advantage. Stevens responded with the game's next two goals, both by Savarese, but Tufts matched them with two consecutive goals by freshman Owen Sedransk and Kelleher. Freshman Sam Frisoli assisted the Sedransk goal. With 35 seconds remaining in the game, Johnson received a pass from Jake Wright for the Ducks and finished it for the goal to end the game with an 18-5 score in favor of the Jumbos.
Tufts had the edge in shots 65-50, with Stevens starting goalie Jake Zeyher making 18 saves. Garzone was stellar stopping 13 of the 15 shtos (.867) in 45 minutes of action. The Jumbos also scooped up 52 ground balls compared to Stevens' 34. Kyle Adelman continued his strong season with seven ground balls defensively for Tufts. Each team won 13 of 26 face offs.
On spring break this week, Tufts will now travel to play seventh-ranked Lynchburg on Tuesday, March 22 in a 7 pm matchup.
