Haghdan's 3-Hit Shutout Part of Softball's Double-header Sweep Versus Bates on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MEDFORD – Sophomore Kristina Haghdan pitched a three-hit shutout in game one, and the Tufts offense exploded for eight runs in the third inning of game two as the Jumbo softball team swept a double-header over Bates College on Saturday at Spicer Field. The game scores were 3-0 and 11-1 in five innings.

Emma Della Volpe scored four runs in the double-header for Tufts.

With the two victories Tufts won the NESCAC East Division weekend series over the Bobcats three games to zero. The Jumbos improved to 16-2 overall while Bates fell to 4-13.

Haghdan allowed just one Bates base runner through the first four innings, a two-out walk to freshman 2B Janell Sato in the first inning. The only hit she allowed was a one-out single by sophomore DP Mary Collette in the fifth.

The Jumbos scored all three of their runs in the third. Sophomore 2B Emma Della Volpe hit a one-out triple that rattled around the right-field corner. She scored on sophomore SS Mia Steinberg's single to left. Junior 1B Casey Maggiore then hit her second home run of the spring to score Steinberg.

Bates loaded the bases with one out against Haghdan in the seventh, started by back-to-back singles from junior 3B Julia Panepinto and senior LF Andrea Russ. However, Haghdan got a pair of strikeouts to end the game. She remained unbeaten early in the season at 6-0 and matched her career-high by striking out 11 Bobcats.

Maggiore finished 2 for 3 with two rbis and a run for Tufts in game one.

Bates junior pitcher Kirsten Pelletier went six innings giving up seven hits and three runs with five strikeouts and a walk for the loss.

A two-run home run by junior 3B Jamie Stevens got Tufts' big third inning in game two started. The Jumbos sent 12 batters to the plate with eight of the first nine getting on. A Bobcat miscue in the outfield allowed three runs to score on one play. Maggiore also added an rbi double. Tufts led 11-0 after three.

The Jumbos had scored in the bottom of the first when Della Volpe led off with a double. She took third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by senior catcher Christian Cain. Tufts then increased its margin to 3-0 in the second on back-to-back rbi singles by Steinberg and sophomore DH Sofia Molina.

Three Tufts pitchers limited Bates to three hits in game two. Sophomore Kristi Van Meter started and did not allow a hit over three innings, though she walked three. She worked out of a second and third with one out jam in the first by getting a pair of strikeouts.

Bates scored their only run of the weekend when Russo led off the fourth with a single through the left side. She scored on a triple to right by freshman 2B Emily Samar.

Junior Maria Ostapovich finished 2 for 3 with two runs for Tufts in the nightcap, while sophomore Edie Huling went 2 for 2 with a run off the bench. Della Volpe scored three runs in the game and Cain had two hits. Stevens drove home three runs and Steinberg had two.

Van Meter improved to 7-1 with the win. Junior Allison Tilton pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Jumbos.

Sophomore Payton Buxton, one of three Bates pitchers in the game, took the loss giving up seven hits and five runs in two innings. Sophomore Jevan Sandhu allowed just one hit and a walk in 1.2 good relief innings.

Tufts hosts Endciott College in a non-league double-header at Spicer on Tuesday. Bates is next in action on Wednesday when they host in-state rival St. Joseph's College.
