Field Hockey Falls on The Road to MIT Wednesday Night, 1-0

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Emily Penn scored her 10th goal of the season in the 50th minute to lift MIT over No. 5 nationally ranked Tufts, 1-0 Wednesday night at Jack Barry Field.

Shannon Yogerst recorded three shots, two on goal for the Jumbos

The Engineers improved to 6-1 on the season (0-1 NEWMAC), while the Jumbos fell to 3-2 overall (3-0 NESCAC).

The Jumbos outshot MIT, 8-0, in the first half and were awarded the only penalty corner of the opening frame.

Tufts almost got on the board after five minutes expired but Gigi Tutoni's shot was saved by freshman goalie Grace Moore. Shannon Yogerst corralled the rebound however her follow-up attempt was off the mark. Just over two minutes later, Mary Kate Patton found herself in a one-on-one situation with Moore but her shot was wide.

The Jumbos continued to control the action after the intermission as they registered nine shots, five of which were on goal, and two penalty corners during the first nine minutes of the second stanza.

The hosts ended the scoreless affair following their lone penalty corner of the night. Freshman Emma Majercack initiated the corner and the ball made its way to classmate Amanda Garofalo who found Penn on the near side of the arc. After dodging a defender, she was able to sneak the ball between Polinski's blocker and outstretched leg at the near post.

Tufts continued to press as it picked up two more penalty corners, however, the resulting shots were blocked by a defender and turned away courtesy of freshman Jeanne Harabedian's defensive save with 5:36 remaining.

The Jumbos' final attempt to extend the game occurred during the last 34 seconds of regulation. Mary Travers sent a shot from the near side that rolled past Moore but Beth Krikorian wasn't able to redirect the ball at the far post.

Tufts finished the game with the edge in shots (21-2) and penalty corners (5-1), but were unable to score on MIT goalie, Grace Moore, who recorded 11 saves. Tufts goalie, Emily Polinski came away with one save in the game.

MIT will play again on saturday at home against Mount Holyoke, the game is scheduled for a 3 pm start time. The Jumbos next game will be on the road at Mary Washington on saturday, scheduled for a 12 pm start time.
