BELMONT, Mass. – After suffering their first setback of the season to No. 1 Harvard, the No. 18 Tufts women's squash team took no time to get back in the win column, picking up a 7-2 win over No. 28 Connecticut College at the Belmont Hill School Saturday afternoon.
The win moves the Jumbos record to 13-1 this season with the lone setback coming to top ranked Harvard on Friday night snapping the Jumbos' 12 match winning streak.
Freshman Claire Davidson played in the first position for the second time this season, but picked up her first win in that spot with a 11-9, 8-11, 11-8, 11-2 win over Mawa Ballo. In the second position, sophomore Hannah Burns needed just three games to top Davis Lemay, 11-6, 11-6, 11-5. Rookie Catherine Shanahan took on Margaret Davey in the third position and won, 11-2, 11-4, 11-3.
In the fourth position, junior Lauren Banner kept up her stellar play and won over Anne Holly, 9-11, 11-1, 11-7, 11-4. Sophomore Olivia Ladd-Luthringhauser took on Jacqueline Chu in the fifth position and won in three games, 11-5, 11-9, 11-9. Classmate Chista Irani picked up a win for the Jumbos in the sixth position, needing just three games to beat Elizabeth Varoli (11-4, 11-9, 11-3). The last Jumbo win came in the ninth position from freshman Kate Deveaux, as she topped Caroline Lippincott, 11-7, 11-6, 11-4.
Sophomore Sinclair Meggitt dueled with Allie Fuller in the seventh position but lost in five games, with two of the five games going to extra points (4-11, 11-9, 3-11, 12-10, 12-10. Rounding out the Jumbos lineup was junior Gabi Salomon, who took on Phoebe Pliakas-Smith in the eighth position, but fell 11-9, 2-11, 11-9, 11-7.
The Jumbos have a huge day on Sunday as they travel up to take on a tough No. 25 Colby (2 pm start) and then stop at No. 15 Bates on their way home (6 pm start).
