CLAREMONT, CA - The fourth-ranked Chicago Maroons topped Tufts 8-1 in collegiate men's tennis action Wednesday afternoon in California.
The loss was Tufts' first this week on their spring break trip. The Jumbos (4-1) had won four straight prior to today. Chicago, which features four nationally-ranked singles players and a ranked doubles pair, improved to 12-1.
Chicago won two out of three in doubles. Each match finished with an 8-5 score. The lone Tufts pair to win was Rob Jacobson and Jay Glickman at #3. Chicago's #3 in the nation duo of David Liu and Nicolas Chua defeated Jumbos Nick Cary and Rohan Gupte at #1.
Leading 2-1, Chicago got its first singles win from Peter Leung who defeated Jacobson 6-4, 6-3 in fourth singles. Chua, the #6 ranked player nationally in singles, made it 4-1 Maroons with 7-5 and 6-0 scores over Nik Telkedzhiev on the first singles court. Luke Tsai's 6-4, 6-3 victory against Danny Coran at #6 clinched the win for Chicago.
Gupte and Glickman both had leads in their matches for the Jumbos. Gupte lost to Charlie Pei 2-6, 6-3, 6-0. Glickman fell 0-6, 6-0, 7-5 to the #36 ranked David Liu. Max Liu (#17) won against Tufts sophomore Zain Ali 7-5, 6-1.
The Jumbos continue their California trip with a NESCAC match against Colby on Thursday in Indian Wells at 3 pm. Chicago plays at second-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday.
