10th Ranked Colby Takes NESCAC Women's Lacrosse Battle over Tufts

WATERVILLE, ME - The 10th-ranked Colby College women's lacrosse team led 8-3 at halftime, then held off an early Tufts University run in the second half for a 13-8 win in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Friday night at Bill Alfond Field.

Freshman Gabby Vinci scored for the second straight game

Colby improves to 2-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference, while ninth-ranked Tufts drops to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the league.

Dana Swaffield led the Mules with two goals, two assists, and four draw controls. Gemma Bready added two goals, one assist, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Emilie Klein also had a big game with two goals, four ground balls, and three caused turnovers.

Lexie Perticone and Chrissy Coveney also had two goals for Colby, while Kendall Smith finished with one goal and two assists. Maddie Hatch and Abby Hooper each had one goal.

Caroline Ross led Tufts with one goal, three assists, four draw controls, and two ground balls. Brigid Bowser had a big all-around game with two goals, five draw controls, four caused turnovers, and four ground balls. Taylor Meek had a game-high three goals, Gabby Vinci had one goal and two draw controls, and Kate Mackin also scored.

Tufts had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before the Mules went ahead for good. Ross scored 3:23 into the game, but Swaffield answered with 25:16 remaining to tie it at 1-1. Meek scored with 20:27 for the Jumbos' last lead of the game.

Bready tied the game at 2-2 when she went up high after a rebound and swiped the ball back into the net with 16:04 to halftime. Coveney scored from Smith with 14:49 remaining and Hatch added her goal 47 seconds later on a pass from Swaffield.

The Jumbos cut the margin to 4-3 when Mackin scored from Ross a minute after Hatch's goal.

The Mules, though, ran off four unanswered goals to take charge. Klein, Smith, and Coveney scored unassisted goals in a four-minute span. Bready added a free-position goal with 1:20 to go for an 8-3 margin.

Tufts came out ready to play at the start of the second half and cut the lead to 8-6 after just 4:15 of action. Vinci scored unassisted just 2:03 into play, Meek got a goal from Ross 1:02 later, and Bowser capped off the run with a goal with 25:45 to go.

Colby settled down and neither team managed a goal until Abby Hooper tallied from Bready with 16:55 remaining for a 9-6 margin. Swaffield scored her second goal with 13:15 to play and Klein scored on the run off a nice feed from Smith with 10:17 remaining for an 11-6 lead. Perticone added Colby's fourth straight goal with 7:49 left.

The Jumbos did battle back with two straight goals in a span of 24 seconds. Bowser scored from Ross with 4:13 to play and Meek added her third of the game with 3:49 left.

Perticone closed out the scoring on a nifty move in front off a Swaffield pass.

Izzy Scribano stopped five shots for the Mules, while Audrey Evers made five of her eight saves in the first half.

Colby had a 33-18 shots advantage and were 18-for-19 on clears. Tufts had a 13-10 margin in draw controls.
