HARTFORD, Conn. – Rookie Hannah Burns won in the third position, but it wasn't enough as the tenth seeded Tufts women's squash team fell to seventh seeded Bates, 8-1, on Friday in the opening round of the NESCAC Championships. The Jumbos will now move to the consolation bracket to complete tournament play.
The Jumbos are now 7-7 this year. They will take on ninth seeded Wesleyan and 11th seeded Connecticut College on Saturday in consolation bracket play at Wesleyan.
Burns faced off with Katie Bull in the third position for the Jumbos, and she needed four games to top her Bobcat opponent, winning, 11-6, 6-11, 11-5, 11-1. Classmate Sinclair Meggitt also played one of the closest matches of the day in the seventh position. After falling in the first game, Meggitt won the next two games in extra points before falling in the next two to lose in five games to Bates' Hannah Conner.
