HARTFORD, Conn. - Junior goalkeeper Julia Pitino recorded seven saves for her Trinity record-tying eighth shutout of the season to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 2-0 victory over the visiting Tufts University Jumbos in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's soccer action this afternoon.
Trinity, ranked No. 6 in New England, improves to 9-2-2 overall and 6-2 in the NESCAC, while the Jumbos fall to 6-4-3 overall and 4-3-1 in the league.
Trinity scored 6:53 into the game when senior captains Kendra Lena and Sheena Landy connected on a corner kick. Lena took the corner and placed the ball in the air in front of the Tufts goal, and Landy outmuscled several players on both teams before heading the ball in.
Tufts had chances in the first half, including a perfectly-timed header off a corner kick by Chandler Quintin that Pitino snagged out of the air on its way to the goal in the 30th minute.
Trinity added to its lead in the 52nd minute, when first-year Tricia Pollock blasted a shot past Jumbo sophomore goalie Emily Bowers from 18 yards out on the right side after receiving a pass back out of traffic by sophomore forward Taylor Kirchgessner.
The Bantam defense held Tufts to just two shots after halftime, and Pitino saved them both to tie the shutout record set by Monica DiFiori just last fall. Bowers finished with four saves for Tufts.
The Jumbos have two more games in the regular season, against Williams College next Saturday for a noon start and a 3 pm match on Tuesday, October 25th at Bowdoin.
The Bantams return home to play conference foe Connecticut College on Wednesday at 3 pm.
