MEDFORD - Competing in two round-robins of 10 teams each, Tufts Women's Sailing placed eighth at the Duplin Trophy hosted by the Jumbos at Upper Mystic Lake.
The Jumbos went 3-6 in both rounds with the exact same results. They defeated Boston College, Brown and Rhode Island in both rounds. However, they lost to Bowdoin, MIT, Stanford, South Florida, Vermont and Yale both times too.
In the first round, Tufts' loss to South Florida was close as the Jumbo boats placed second, third and sixth. In the second round, Tufts swept the top three finishes against Rhode Island. They second, third and sixth in a close loss to Yale.
Eight Tufts sailors competed. The duos of sophomore skipper MaryClaire Kiernan with senior crew Amanda Sommi and senior skipper Kate Levinson with senior crew Emily Lynn alternated as the A boat. Senior skipper Kate Shaner with sophomore crew Julia Fuller in B's and first-year skipper Molly Pleskus with first-year crew Lucy Zwigard in C's both sailed all races.
Stanford won the trophy with a perfect 18-0 record.
Saturday's racing was held with temperatures remaining at 33 degrees while it snowed all day making for wet conditions. The wind, however, was perfect for team racing with at 10-16 knots North. Sunshine greeted the teams on Sunday with good wind to start, NNE at 7-14. The temperature climbed nicely to 40 degrees (only 10 below normal) as the wind got flukey varying in direction from NW to NE and from 1 knot to 11 knots after noon.
