CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Tufts women's tennis team picked up their second win in as many matches on Thursday, topping La Verne 6-3. The Jumbos used a doubles lead and strong singles play to secure the win.
Taking the courts for only the second time in match play this spring, the Jumbos doubles teams once again fared well. The Jumbo duo of sophomore Alexa Meltzer and Zoe Miller faced off with La Verne's Andrea Madrigal and Janae Chinn in the second doubles spot and were able to earn the 8-5 win. The second Jumbos win in doubles play came from the pair of sophomores Jacqueline Baum and Chelsea Hayashi who blanked the Leopards Shenelle Trujillo and Lauren Torres, 8-0.
With the 2-1 lead going into singles play, the Jumbos quickly picked up a win from Baum in the fifth singles position over Trujillo, 6-3, 6-1. Rookie Lauren Louks then added a win from the third singles position over Torres, 6-2, 6-0. It was the Leopards that would get on the board with a win next, as Bridget Etchegaray topped Hayashi in the fourth singles position, 6-2, 6-2.
The Jumbos then picked up another win from Miller in the sixth spot, as she topped Chinn in two sets, 6-4, 6-2. The Leopards picked up their last win in the second singles spot, as Laina Matsuda was able to edge Meltzer, 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore Conner Calabro was the last Jumbos to turn in a win, taking the courts in the first singles position, and handing Madrigal a two set loss, 7-5, 6-4.
In the first doubles position Calabro and Louks faced off with Matsuda and Etchegaray, but fell to the Leopard duo, 8-1.
The Jumbos are now 2-0 this spring and will take the courts again on Friday when they take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 1:00 pm. La Verne moves to 6-3 this season, and will be back in action on Tuesday when they face off with Willamette.
