Paget Stanco won for the Jumbos in the first position against Conn. College |
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The #28 Tufts women's squash team closed out their weekend on a high note, beating #27 Connecticut College 6-3 on Sunday afternoon on the Camel's home courts. The win avenged a 5-4 loss earlier this season.
Junior tri-captain Paget Stanco took the courts in the first position, and was able to come back after losing the first game in extra points to top the Camel's Leah Puklin, 10-12, 11-6, 11-8, 11-8. Senior tri-captain Paige Dahlman picked up a win for the Jumbos in the second position, cruising past Ashley Arthur in three games, 11-9, 11-7, 11-7.
First-year Lauren Banner took on the Camel's Nina Nalle in the fifth position, and was able to pull through with a three game win, 11-7, 11-6, 11-5. In the sixth position, sophomore Anna Bezahler needed just three games to beat Allie Fuller (11-1, 11-3, 11-4). That three game win in which her opponent was only able to score eight points across the three games was the most convincing win on the day for the Jumbos.
In the seventh position, sophomore Lynn Cheng pulled out a comeback win after losing the first game to Anne Holly, eventually winning in four games (6-11, 11-1, 11-7, 11-7). The last Jumbo win came in the eighth position, as Gabi Salomon was able to top Myra Jacobs in three games, all by the same score, 11-7.
In the second position, first-year Claudia Udolf battled her Connecticut College opponent to five games, but was just edged by Mawa Ballo (8-11, 9-11, 12-10, 12-10, 11-9). Senior tri-captain Ann Bellinger also played a close match in the fourth position, but was topped by her Camel counterpart (11-7, 6-11, 11-7, 11-7). Rounding out the Jumbos lineup was Nellie Harvey in the ninth position, but the Jumbo fell to Victoria Allen in three close games, 11-9, 11-9, 11-6.
The Jumbos (5-11) will be back in action this Friday as they travel to Williams to compete in the NESCAC Championships. Connecticut College (6-13) will also return to action this weekend with conference tournament play.
