Baptista Explodes for 27 Points as Women's Basketball Defeats Wesleyan 77-53

MIDDLETOWN, CT - NESCAC co-leader Tufts (18-1, 6-0) picked up its 12th straight win against Wesleyan (8-10, 1-5) with a 77-53 women's basketball victory here today.

The Jumbos broke away from a 21-21 tie with 8:48 to go in the first half, using a 21-8 finish to the period to assume a 42-29 halftime lead.

Scoring the first two baskets of the second half, the Cardinals got as close as nine, but an 11-2 Jumbo burst put the difference at 53-35 with 15:26 remaining.  Wesleyan got no closer than 13 the rest of the day. The game's largest margin was 26 with 2:17 left (77-51).

Tufts will host Rhode Island College Tuesday in a non-conference contest for its next outing.  Wesleyan resumes play next Friday, traveling to Trinity for a NESCAC matchup.

Leading the Jumbos on the day with 27 points was first-year Melissa Baptista, as she came off the bench to play 20 minutes.  She was a near-perfect 10 for 11 at the line and eight for 15 from the field.  Senior Hannah Foley added 19 points as she improved her career scoring figure to 994 points.  Notching a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds was sophomore Michela North.

Tufts had 20 assists on its 26 baskets with first-year Lauren Dillon dishing out nine of them. Senior Hayley Kanner tied for game-high honors on the boards with 10 as the Jumbos enjoyed a 51-34 edge on the glass.

Wesleyan got 16 points from senior Jess Cherenza and 12 points from senior Dreisen Heath.  Heath also tied for team-high rebounding honors with five and led the Cardinals in assists with three along with three steals.

Tufts jumped out to a 13-4 lead after six minutes of action before the Cardinals countered with a 17-8 run to knot the count at 21-21.  It was Wesleyan's only major move of the afternoon as Tufts controlled the tempo for the final 28:48 of the contest.
