Anna Bezahler won against Bates in the sixth position for the Jumbos |
LEWISTON, Maine – The Tufts women's squash team had three members win against Bates on Tuesday evening, but it wasn't enough as the Bobcats topped the Jumbos in the second semester opener for the Jumbos. The match is one of two on the docket for the Jumbos this week, as they will host Haverford on Friday at the Belmont Hill School.
First-year Lauren Banner picked up a win for the Jumbos in the fifth position, topping Emma Korein, 11-7, 11-5, 11-1. Sophomore Anna Bezahler was also able to beat her Bates opponent in three games in the sixth position, downing Sarah Miller, 11-4, 12-10, 11-4. The last win for the Jumbos came in the seventh position from rookie Gabi Salomon who topped Sugeiry Betances, 11-4, 11-1, 11-4.
Junior tri-captain Paget Stanco, who was playing in her first match since spending the first semester abroad, took the courts in the first position for the Jumbos, but fell to Nessrine Arifin, 12-10, 11-2, 11-3. Rookie Claudia Udolf fell to Myriam Kelly in the second position, 11-3, 11-3, 11-5. Senior tri-captains Paige Dahlman and Ann Bellinger played in the third and fourth positions, respectively. Dahlman scored 26 points in three games, but fell to Lesea Bourke, 11-8, 11-9, 11-9. Bellinger was bested by Chloe Mitchell, 11-8, 11-2, 11-6.
First-year Nellie Harvey played in the eight spot but was beaten by Bates' Carolyn Attenborough, 11-4, 11-9, 11-4. The Bobcats won by default in the ninth position.
The Bobcats are now 6-5 on the season and will return to action on January 24 at the Middlebury Round Robin, playing Franklin & Marshall and host Middlebury.
The Jumbos move to 2-9 overall and will be back in action on Friday when they host Haverford at the Belmont Hill School at 7:00 pm.
