Tom Ryan got the final out for a clutch save

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Freshman 2B Tom Petry doubled home a run in the top of the 12th and then junior reliever Tom Ryan recorded the last out with the tying run on second base as the Tufts baseball team won a back-and-forth, early-season classic 8-7 over MIT on Sunday at the Apprentice School.

The win was the second in as many days for Tufts (4-0) over the Engineers, including 9-5 on Saturday. Today's game featured 15 hits by both teams, with four from Jumbo LF Nick Barker and five by MIT junior Hayden Cornwell leading the way.

The Jumbos led 2-1 after three innings on a pair of unearned runs in the third. Petry singled and scored and Barker had an rbi single. MIT (2-2) had opened the scoring when senior Creed Mangrum walked and eventually scored on Cornwell's single.

Tufts went ahead 3-1 after junior CF Connor McDavitt singled to lead off the fifth and took second on a throwing error. He scored on Wade Hauser's single through the left side. A lead-off single in the top of the eighth by junior catcher Bryan Egan led to a 4-1 Tufts advantage when he scored on sophomore SS Matt Moser's sac fly.

That's when the game turned classic. The Engineers surged to a 5-4 advantage by scoring four in the bottom of the eighth. Cornwell and sophomore Kendall Helbert both singled and score while senior Sean Karson delivered a two-run single and classmate Jon Rea had an rbi single.

Into the ninth, the Jumbos went ahead 6-5 with two runs. Hauser doubled one home and then scored when Egan followed with a single. However, MIT extended the game to extra innings in the bottom of the ninth. Junior K.J. Parent hit a two-out single scoring Cornwell, who had singled earlier and it was 6-6.

The Jumbos grabbed a 7-6 advantage in the 11th as Hauser was hit by a pitch and scored on a pinch single by senior Max Freccia. MIT answered again though with their own pinch-hit single. After a one-out double from Cornwell, senior Patrick Dayton knocked an rbi single and it was 7-7.

Moser led off the top of the 12th with a single to left for Tufts, was sacrificed to second by junior 1B James Howard and scored on Petry's double. In the bottom of the inning, Moser, who had entered as pitcher in the eighth, retired the first two MIT hitters. However, a walk and a hit-by-pitch put the tying run in scoring position. Ryan came on and got a 6-4 fielder's choice to end it.

Both teams had received strong starts. Tufts freshman Tim Superko went six innings giving up just four hits and a run with seven strikeouts and three walks in his collegiate debut. MIT senior Max Ockner threw seven innings allowing just one earned run and striking out six.

Hauser finished 2 for 5 with a pair of runs and rbis for Tufts. Petry was 2 for 6 and McDavitt scored twice. Cornwell, whose line went 6-3-5-1, was joined by Karson at 2 for 6 with two rbis and a run as MIT's leaders. Herbert finished 2 for 6 with a run and junior Parker Tew had a 2 for 6 game.
