NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Junior 3B Wade Hauser hit a three-run inside-the-park home run in the second inning and finished 2 for 4 with three rbis and two runs scored as the Tufts baseball team won 9-5 against MIT at the Apprentice School on Saturday.
With the win, Tufts (3-0) swept a pair of games in Virginia on Saturday. The Jumbos had defeated Saint Vincent 3-0 earlier in the day. MIT dropped to 1-1 with the loss.
The Jumbos led MIT 6-0 after two innings. In the first, after walks to Hauser and senior DH Max Freccia, sophomore 1B Mike Barry hit a run-scoring single. A second run scored with an error on the play.
In the second, freshman RF Oscar Kutch led off with a single followed by walks to Nick Cutsumpas and Tim Mitropoulos. Junior LF Nick Barker plated one run with a sacrifice fly and Hauser then hit a 400-foot inside-the-park home run to dead center bringing three across.
Tufts sophomore starter Andrew David enjoyed the run support and got through five innings allowing just a single run in the third. Junior K.J. Parent led off with a double for MIT and scored on a single by Jon Rea. Through five, David had allowed five hits and no walks.
The Engineers would get to him for four runs in the sixth, closing the gap to 6-5. Back-to-back doubles by senior Creed Mangrum and freshman John Drago to start the inning were followed by a triple from junior Parker Tew. A ground out brought in another run, then sophomore Kendall Helbert hit a second triple. He scored on a ground out making it a one-run game.
The Jumbos responded by scoring twice unearned in the sixth. Cutsumpas led off with a walk and scored on a sac fly by Barker. Mitropoulos reached on an error and scored on a miscue helping Tufts take an 8-5 lead.
Junior Willie Archibald would record a three-inning save for Tufts. He did not allow a hit and walked two while striking out three. Tufts added a ninth run as Cutsumpas led off with his third walk, stole second and scored on a single by freshman 2B Tom Petry.
The Jumbos had 10 hits in the game. Junior CF Connor McDavitt was 2 for 5 with a run in the lead-off spot. Freccia finished 2 for 4 with a run. Cutsumpas scored three runs and Barker had the two rbi. David got the win going six innings allowing nine hits and five runs with no walks and four strikeouts.
Tew led MIT with a 3 for 4 game, scoring once and driving in a run. Sophomore Nicholas Locasio was the losing pitcher, allowing six hits and eight runs (five earned) with five walks and three strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
The teams meet again tomorrow at Apprentice School with a noon start.
