MEDFORD - Amherst senior tri-captain Marta Randall (Monkton, MD) scored with 13 seconds remaining in the second half to give the visiting Lord Jeffs a dramatic 6-5 victory at Tufts in NESCAC women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Bello Field.

First-year goalie Christy Forrest (Madison, CT) made 14 saves for 10th-ranked Amherst as #17 Tufts finished with a 27-13 advantage in shots for the game. The Lord Jeffs, led by two goals from junior Alex Philie (East Sandwich, MA), stopped a two-game losing streak and improved to 7-4 overall and 4-4 in the league.

Junior Gabby Horner (Allentown, NJ) and first-year Caroline Ross (Sewickley, PA) both scored twice for Tufts, which dropped to 6-5 and 2-5 in NESCAC.

The Jumbos were in possession of the ball as the clock wound down with under a minute to play in regulation. However, they were called for a charge and turned the ball over. On the Amherst clear, senior tri-captain Hillary Densen (Summit, NJ) found Randall with a long pass in open field down at the Tufts end. Randall charged to the goal, averted a defender and scored.

Amherst never trailed in the game, but there were four ties. The Lord Jeffs opened with a 2-0 lead on goals by junior Krista Zsitvay (New Vernon, NJ) and Philie. However, Horner answered with consecutive goals to tie it 2-2 at 21:07 of the first half.

Philie and Ross exchanged goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half and it was 3-3 at intermission. Forrest had nine saves at the break as Tufts earned a 15-7 first-half shots advantage.

Amherst was successful on free-position opportunities at both ends of the field. They were 3 for 7 taking them overall and did not allow a Tufts shot on a free-position chance all game. In the second half, free-position goals by first-year Mia Haughton (Princeton, NJ) and junior Elizabeth Ludlow (Huntington, NY) helped give Amherst a 5-4 lead.

However, Tufts answered Ludlow's score just 23 seconds later when sophomore Emily Wright (Richmond, VA) controlled a draw. That led to junior Kate Applegate's (Chadds Ford, PA) pass to junior Eliza Halmo (Brunswick, ME), who scored with 7:12 on the clock to tie the game at 5-5.

The Jumbo defense was led by senior Collier Clegg (Evanston, IL), who caused four turnovers. Senior co-captain Meg Boland (New Canaan, CT) caused three. Wright finished with three draw controls and junior Kelley Cohen (Framingham, MA) led with three groundballs. Senior goalie Tess Shapanka (Sudbury, MA) made four saves.

Haughton added an assist to join Philie with two points as Amherst's scoring leaders. Philie also won two draws, scooped two groundballs, and caused a turnover. Sophomore Priscilla Tyler (Providence, RI) posted a game-high four draw controls.

Tufts travels to Bates for mid-weed NESCAC action on Tuesday at 5 pm. Amherst hosts Skidmore in non-league play Tuesday at 7:15 pm.
