CLERMONT, FL - The Tufts softball team opened it 2013 season by getting 18 hits, including four apiece by sophomore CF Michelle Cooprider (Hopkinton, MA) and junior RF Kayla Holland (Attleboro, MA), in a 13-4 victory over Bethany College on Saturday.
Holland went 4 for 4 with three runs scored and an rbi. Cooprider, batting second, finished 4 for 5 with a run and an rbi. Sophomore pitcher Allyson Fournier (South Windsor, CT) started for Tufts and allowed one hit and no runs with five strikeouts in three innings. Senior Aly Moskowitz (Westfield, NJ) earned the victory, giving up four hits and four unearned runs in four innings of work.
Tufts led 7-0 after three innings. Senior 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA) spearheaded a three-run third with a two-run single. Holland singled home a run, stole a base and scored in a four-run third.
Three Jumbo errors led to four unearned runs by the Bison in the bottom of the fourth, narrowing the margin to 7-4. Bethany CF Sam Newfrock drove home two runs with a single. Moskowitz got a strikeout to end the inning with two on base, and she cruised for the rest of the way.
Tufts added three in the fifth, with first-year 3B Christina Raso (Burlington, MA) contributing an rbi single and scoring a run during her college debut. Junior catcher Jo Clair (Glastonbury, CT) added a two-run single in the seventh when Tuft plated three more.
Junoir Sara Hedtler (Wrentham, MA) was a spark atop the Tufts order, finishing 2 for 5 with three runs and an rbi. Clair was 2 for 5 with the two rbi and Raso ended up 2 for 4 with two runs and two rbi.
The Jumbos did their damage off Bethany pitchers Emily Jump (3 IP, 8 H, 2 ER) and Kelsey Bish (4 IP, 10 H, 5 ER). The Bison fell to 3-3.
Tufts plays a second game today at 6 pm against Calvin. The Bison return to action tomorrow in Florida against Wisconsin Eau-Claire.
