Sophomore Sophie Laing challenged her Bates counterpart, losing in five games Saturday

LEWISTON, ME - Sophomore Paget Stanco (Rye, NY) won a game in the number one position, and sophomore Sophie Laing (Red Hook, NY) took her match to five games in the number five position, but it wasn't enough as the women's squash team was topped by Bates, 9-0 in NESCAC squash action on Saturday.
Stanco battled with the Bobcat's Nessrine Ariffin, scoring 31 points across four games, but she was eventually beaten in the number one position, 11-6, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8. First year Anna Bezahler (Philadelphia, PA) was topped in three games in the number two spot, while fellow classmate Lynn Cheng (Singapore) faced a similar fate in the number three position.
Junior Ann Bellinger (Arlington, VA) scored 18 total points in her three game loss in the number four position. Senior Caroline Howe (Carlisle, MA) and junior Sally Pratt (Groton, MA) each lost in three games against their Bobcats counterparts in the five and six positions, respectively.
Juniors Eleanor Monroe (New Canaan, CT) and Rachel Jackson (Woodinville, WA) both challenged their Bates opponents in the seven and eight positions, but both Jumbos lost in three games. Laing put up the biggest fight of the day for the Jumbos, taking Carolyn Attenborough to five games, but eventually falling, 6-11, 11-7, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6.
The Jumbos will be back in action on Sunday as they take on Bard and Middlebury. The matches begin with a 3:00 pm showdown with Bard.
