MEDFORD - The Tufts women's basketball team improved to 6-0 with a 83-44 win over Salem State Tuesday night at Cousens Gym. First-year Michela North (Duxbury, MA) recorded her first collegiate double-double with 24 points on 10-for-14 shooting and 10 rebounds off the bench.
With the loss, the Vikings fall to 3-4.
Junior Hannah Foley (Acton, MA) tallied 10 points and six rebounds while sophomore Emma Roberson (Arlington, MA) added nine points and three assists. Junior Hayley Kanner (Scarsdale, NY) and senior Liz Moynihan (Storrs, CT) each scored seven points for the Jumbos.
The visitors were led by junior Rachael Carter who scored a team-high 15 points. Malissa Saad added seven points and two rebounds while teammate Ashley White scored six points and grabbed three boards.
The Jumbos jumped out to a 8-0 advantage fueled by a three-pointer and layup by Foley in the first four minutes of the game. Tufts' lead got as large as 28 when they finished on a 7-0 run in the last minute of the half. Moynihan sank a trey followed by a layup by North and with 11 seconds left Roberson collected a steal and finished with a layup.
The home team outscored the Vikings in the paint 26-6 and the bench contributed 34 points in the first half.
Tufts opened the second half with a 6-0 run on layps by Kanner, junior Ali Berman (Fairfield, CT) and Foley. The Jumbos' lead would grow to as large as 49 with 7:56 left in the game on a jumper by sophomore Nicole Brooks (Greenburgh, NY).
The Jumbo defense forced 30 turnovers and outrebounded the Vikings 45-34.
The Jumbos are back in action Thursday night at 7 pm when they host Fitchburg State. Salem State welcomes Emmanuel College Thursday for a 7 pm tip-off.
