#6 Colby Women's Lacrosse Denies #10 Jumbos' Comeback for 11-10 NESCAC Win in Florida

Kerry Eaton scored five for Tufts, including the game-tying goal

CLERMONT, FL - After Colby built a 9-3 halftime lead, and then Tufts came all the way back to tie the score at 10-10 in the second half, Colby's Katharine Eddy scored with 4:31 remaining to give the Mules an 11-10 victory over the Jumbos in a NESCAC women's lacrosse game played at the National Training Center in Florida on Friday morning.

Colby remained unbeaten at 6-0 overall and 3-0 in NESCAC. They were led by four goals and an assist from Lindsey McKenna. Tufts lost for the first time, dropping to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the league. Junior Kerry Eaton (Norfolk, MA) scored five times to pace the Jumbos.

McKenna scored three goals in the first four minutes of the game to get Colby going. Eaton broke up the run for Tufts, but Tess Petesch tallied the next two for the Mules and they led 5-1 at the 20:32 mark.

Senior Sterling Champion (Lighthouse Point, FL) had a free-position goal bringing the Jumbos within 5-2, but Kate Pistel netted two of four straight Colby goals for a 9-2 advantage. Eaton scored in the final second of the first half for a 9-3 Mules lead at intermission.

In the second half, Eaton spurred the comeback with two goals in the first four minutes as the Jumbos closed to within 9-6. McKenna knotched her fourth of the game for Colby, but sophomore Kate Applegate (Chadds Ford, PA) scored back-to-back goals 35 seconds apart and the Jumbos trailed just 10-9 with 13:36 remaining.

Eaton's fifth goal of the game at 7:59, bringing Tufts' second-half advantage to 7-1, tied the score at 10-10. However, Eddy scored at 4:31 and she also controlled the ensuing draw allowing the Mules to drain time off the clock. The Jumbos would get one more possession, but could not net the equalizer.

Pistel finished with two goals and two assists for Colby, while Eddy added two goals and three draw controls. McKenna was two for two on free-position shots and also won three draws. Kat McCarrick caused three turnovers and scooped up three groundballs defensively, while Claire Dickson made six saves in goal.

Senior Emily Pillemer (Arlington, MA) led Tufts with four groundballs and classmate Katie Lotz (Montclair, NJ) caused two turnovers. Junior goalie Tess Shapanka (Sudbury, MA) finished with eight saves.

Tufts returns home to host Middlebury College on Sunday at 11 am. Colby next hosts Husson on Wednesday at 7 pm.
