CLAREMONT, FL – Trailing 2-1 early, the 10th ranked Tufts women's lacrosse team ran off 16 unanswered goals and defeated Western Connecticut State University, 17-3, in a non-league game during its spring-break trip to Florida on Tuesday.
Senior tri-captain Lara Kozin (Suffern, NY) scored four goals with four assists for the Jumbos, who improved to 4-0 overall. First-year Lindsey Walker (Suffern, NY) added three goals, while junior Meg Boland (New Canaan, CT) finished with a goal and three assists. Eleven players scored goals overall for the Jumbos.
Western Connecticut (4-2) led 2-1 with 11 minutes gone in the first half after goals by Nicole Perrone and Devon Edwards. It was all Tufts from there. Kozin scored all eight of her points in the first half and the Jumbos led 12-2 at intermission.
Tufts then tallied the first five goals of the second half to lead 17-2 before Edwards scored her second of the game for the Colonials to cap the scoring.
Kozin also tied for the Tufts lead in ground balls with three, joining sophomore Eliza Halmo (Brunswick, ME). Boland controlled three draws to lead the Jumbos. Junior Tess Shapanka (Sudbury, MA) was credited with two first-half saves to earn the win.
Goalie Karli Portnoy led the Colonials with four ground balls while making one save. Emily Brooks won four draws.
The Jumbos play a NESCAC game against Colby College in Florida on Friday at 9:30 am. The Colonials next play at Wesleyan on March 29.
