HARWICH - Senor CF David Orlowitz (Wakefield, MA) and senior DH Chase Rose (Paradise Valley, AZ) both went 3 for 4 to lead nationally-ranked Tufts' 14-hit attack as the top-seeded Jumbos (27-8-1) hung on for a 3-2 victory Thursday morning against MIT in Game 5 of the 2011 NCAA Division III New England Regional Baseball Championship at Whitehouse Field.
The Jumbos live to play another day, and will take the field tomorrow at 1 pm for another elimination game against either St. Joseph's or Western new England. With the loss, the fourth-seeded Engineers are eliminated and close their season at 25-15.
Bryan Macomber and Ryne Barry each had two hits for MIT, which ended up with seven as a team.
Tufts starter Dave Ryan (Trumbull, CT) pitched eight strong innings, walking four and striking out four to get the victory. Senior closer Ed Bernstein (Foxborough, MA), who was announced as NESCAC and New England Div. III Pitcher of the Year on Wednesday, worked a scoreless ninth, fanning two, to earn his ninth save.
MIT tied it 2-all in the top of the fourth inning on a RBI groundout by Brian Doyle. Tufts broke the deadlock in the bottom half when senior 2B Frank Petroskey (Dallas, TX) scored an unearned run on senior SS David LeResche's (St. Louis, M) ground out to third. Petroskey had reached on a single and eventually advanced to third base on a throwing error.
MIT had taken a 1-0 lead in the first when A.J. Hansborough singled through the left side to plate Doyle, who led off with a single and advanced to second on single by Macomber. The Jumbos, however, reclaimed the lead with two runs in the third. Junior 3B Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) had a run-scoring single to center field and two batters later senior LF Ian Goldberg (Lake Forest, IL) singled to right-center for another run.
