Women's Basketball Rolls Over Salem State 63-31 to Move Over .500 Overall at 3-2

MEDFORD - A dominant second half spurred the Tufts University Jumbos to a 63-31 victory over the Salem State Vikings in non-league women's basketball action on Tuesday evening at Cousens Gym.

The Jumbos held the Vikings to just 23.1 percent shooting (6/26) in the first half and forced 10 turnovers, while only committing two turnovers of their own. First-year Kelsey Morehead (Foster City, CA) led the way for Tufts with eight points in the first 20 minutes on 3 for 7 shooting from the field. Twelve second-chance points were instrumental in giving the Jumbos an 11-point halftime edge, 26-15.

Tufts began the second half on a 19-5 run which included six straight points for sophomore Caitlin McClure (Arlington, VA). A three-pointer from first-year Hannah Foley (Acton, MA) pushed the lead to 27 at 50-23.

First-year Rachael Carter (Merrimack, NH) did her best to keep the Vikings in it, scoring seven second-half points. She finished with 10 for the day on 4 for 9 shooting.

The Tufts defense allowed the Vikings to shoot 21.7 percent (10/46) for the game and the Jumbos scored 19 points off of 23 Salem State turnovers. Conversely, the Jumbos shot 46.7 percent (14/30) in the second half and ended the contest at 36.2 percent (25/69).

Morehead finished the night with 15 points on 5 for 11 shooting. Two other Jumbos reached double figures as McClure had 11 while junior Collier Clegg (Evanston, IL) tallied 10 points. Senior Tiffany Kornegay (Carver, MA) was a stat-sheet stuffer with 6 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocks in 25 minutes of action.

Junior Bridget Dullea (Peabody, MA) was second for the Vikings in scoring with six points. Sophomore Ginny Fleming (Peabody, MA) grabbed six rebounds with two blocks and a steal.

Tufts, now winners of three in a row to move to 3-2, will play in the Regis College Invitational this weekend. They will face St. Joseph's (ME) on Friday at 7 pm. The Vikings fall to 1-3 and will be at Plymouth State Thursday at 5:30 pm.
