WATERVILLE, Me. -- The Tufts University softball team won its
sixth straight NESCAC East Division pennant by sweeping a
doubleheader at Colby College on Saturday afternoon. The Jumbos won
the first game 8-0 and then took the night cap 7-1.
First-year pitcher Rebecca DiBiase (Wellesley,
MA) tossed a five-hit shutout in the opener and senior
Erin Gallagher (Brooklyn, NY) went the distance in
the nightcap as Tufts stretched its winning streak to seven games
and improved to 22-11 overall and 10-2 in the NESCAC East. They
will play Wesleyan University in the first round of the conference
tournament at Williams College next Friday (May 7) at 5 pm.
Sophomore 1B Lena Cantone (Southington, CT)
went 4 for 4 with three runs scored for Tufts in the opener. First
year 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA) added three
hits, three RBI, and two runs.
In the second game, Beinecke had three more hits and drove in a
pair of runs. Senior SS Casey Sullivan (Berlin,
CT) added a homer, triple, two runs, and two RBI.
Lizzi Fort (Wilmette, IL) had two hits for Colby (11-19, 3-9
NESCAC East). Alyssa Lepore, who finished the season with a .462
batting average, had an RBI single to drive in Allyson Cheever
(Augusta, ME) with the lone Mule run.
