WATERVILLE, Me. -- Senior shortstop Casey Sullivan
(Berlin, CT) had an RBI double in the sixth inning and
smacked a two-run homer in the seventh as Tufts University broke
open a close game for a 10-3 win over Colby College in New England
Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East softball
Friday.
With the victory, Tufts earned a spot in next weekend's NESCAC
Tournament. Coach Cheryl Milligan's team also earned its 20th win
of the 2010 campaign, improving to 20-11 overall and 8-2 in the
NESCAC East.
Sullivan had two hits, three runs, and three RBI to pace the
Jumbos, who have won the last three conference titles. First year
2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA) added a pair of
hits, three RBI, and one run scored. Sophomore 1B Lena Cantone (Southington, CT) had two runs and two RBI, while
junior catcher Julia Silberman (Somers, NY)
finished with a pair of hits.
Junior Izzie Santone (Madison, CT) worked six
innings and allowed no earned runs to earn the Tufts victory.
Alyssa Lepore (Victor, NY), the leading hitter in the NESCAC at
the start of the week, had a two-run home run for Colby (11-17, 3-7
NESCAC). Allyson Cheever (Augusta, ME) and Lizzi Fort (Wilmette,
IL) each had two hits.
The two teams will play a noon doubleheader at Colby on
Saturday. One Tufts win will clinch the Jumbos' sixth consecutive
NESCAC East Division pennant.
