MEDFORD -- In a back-and-forth bout that saw seven ties in the
second half, Tufts University sophomore Kevin McCormick
(Laytonsville, MD) scored 33 seconds into overtime to give
the #7 Jumbo men's lacrosse team a scintillating 14-13 victory
against Bowdoin College in the last game of the 2010 regular-season
on Friday night under the lights at Bello Field.
Bowdoin's Owen Smith (Brunswick, ME) had scored with 58 seconds
remaining in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 13 apiece. Tufts
sophomore Nick Rhoads (McLean, VA) won the
overtime face-off, and soon McCormick was darting towards the right
post and scoring the game-winning goal that gave Tufts its most
regular-season wins in program history.
The Jumbos head into the post-season at 13-1 overall. They
earned the #2 seed in the NESCAC Tournament with an 8-1 record and
host Williams College in the first round on Sunday at 1:00. Bowdoin
(8-6, 5-4 NESCAC) also secured a home game on Sunday and will play
Colby at 1:00.
On Seniors Night at Tufts, it was Bowdoin senior Adam Tracy
(Providence, RI) who stole the show early with four goals in the
opening 13 minutes to give the visitors a 4-0 lead. Tufts started
to make its way back on a goal by sophomore Sean Kirwan
(Boonton Township, NJ) at 1:30 of the first quarter. That
started a stretch when Tufts scored six of the next seven goals to
take a 6-5 lead on junior Ryan Molloy's (Setauket,
NY) tally at 7:52 of the second. The Jumbos had six
different goal-scorers during the comeback.
However, Bowdoin regained the lead by halftime, 7-6, on goals by
freshman Billy Bergner (Fairfield, CT) and sophomore Matthew Egan
(Newton, MA).
Into the second half, the teams traded goals three times.
Bowdoin's Russell HallIday (Sudbury, MA) scored twice and the Polar
Bears led 10-9 at 14:48 of the fourth. The Jumbos scored the next
two, including Molly's man-up goal at 12:43 for an 11-10 advantage,
and the hosts would not trail again. Bowdoin tied the score at
11-11 and 12-12, but Tufts had answers both times. Junior
Matt Witko (Chappaqua, NY) put the Jumbos up 13-12
at 1:42, leading to the dramatic conclusion.
Molloy's three goals led Tufts, while Witko, McCormick, and
Kirwan scored two apiece. The Jumbos won the ground ball battle
decisively at 43-28, led defensively by four each from senior
tri-captain Eytan Saperstein (Hewlett, NY) and
senior Evan Crosby (Yarmouthport, MA). Rhoads won
16 of 29 face-offs for Tufts, and sophomore Steven Foglietta (Oceanside, NY) stopped eight shots in goal.
Tufts tallied twice on man-up situations.
Tracy's five goals were the game's high, while Halliday and
Smith each netted three. Junior Ben Chadwick (Needham, MA) finished
with three assists for Bowdoin. Sophomore Christopher Williamson
(Winnetka, IL) was great in goal, with four saves in each quarter
for 16 total. Tracy also led the Bears with four ground balls,
while freshman Brian Durkin (Manchester, MA) won nine
face-offs.
