MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Ranked 12th nationally in Division III this
week, Tufts University (17-2, 4-1 NESCAC) broke a 50-50 tie when
junior Colleen Hart (Needham, MA) drained a
three-pointer to give the Jumbos a 53-50 edge with 5:02 to go, and
Tufts went on to capture a 62-53 NESCAC win at Wesleyan University
(7-10, 1-4) tonight.
Hart finished with a game-high 24 points, giving her 996 in her
career as she seeks to become the ninth Jumbo in history to crack
the 1000-point barrier. Hart combined with sophomore
Tiffany Kornegay (Carver, MA) to score the final
16 points for the visitors as Kornegay, who collected 16 points,
netted six while Hart bagged 10.
Wesleyan never trailed in the first half, and led by as many as
seven (29-22, 6:12 to go) before taking a slim 33-31 lead into
intermission. Tufts took the lead for the first time in the contest
at 42-41 on a free throw by junior Vanessa Miller
(Cincinnati, OH) with 13:04 left to play. Neither team led
by more than two over the next eight minutes until Hart put Tufts
in front to stay.
Wesleyan got 18 points from sophomore Eileen Gaffney and 10 from
sophomore Sam LaCroce. The high rebounder in the game for either
team was Kornegay with six as Wesleyan held a 31-25 edge on the
boards, but turned the ball over 17 times to just eight by
Tufts.
Tufts continues its road NESCAC weekend with a trip to
Connecticut College Saturday while the Cardinals host Bates to
close out its NESCAC weekend Saturday.
